Historically Speaking

The Island of Tobago was initially settled by Amerindians thousands of years B.C. Throughout her history She has been a prize to all contenders for her natural harbors and rich fertile soil. Various tribes of indigenous inhabitants fought to control her as far back as can be known.

Since 1596 when she was claimed by the British, until 1814 when she was ceded to British rule by the Treaty of Paris, Tobago Island changed hands no less than thirty times. We are talking about Prime Caribbean Real Estate here and the legendary battles for her possession raged between Amerindian, British, French, Spanish, Dutch and Courlanders (Latvians) for hundreds of years.

By 1889 she was merging with Trinidad and in 1962 the Twin Island Republic gained its independence from Great Britain.

Geographically Speaking

Trinidad and Tobago are the southern most of the Eastern Caribbean Island chain. The islands were once part of the vast South American continent now separated by just a few kilometers of ocean. Flora and fauna of Tobago still reflect this connection in their incredible diversity and are vastly different than their northerly neighbors.
